FILMMAKING FOR YOUNG NIGERIANS

The Nigerian film industry has become a recognizable force as well as a solid brand, not only in Africa, but in the world as a whole. Films of various genres: comedy, drama, soap operas, thriller, romance or gospel, are regularly produced in Nigeria by Nigerians, and are strategically distributed in large numbers within and beyond the shores of this continent called Africa.

Filmmaking has come a long way in Nigeria. The earliest film production companies in Nigeria were Latola Films and Calpeny Nigeria Ltd.

The Yoruba travelling theatre groups pioneered the earliest movies in Nigeria. Men like the late Hubert Ogunde, Ola Balogun, Adeyemi Afolayan, Duro Ladipo, Oyin Adejobi, Kola Ogunmola, Akin Ogungbe, Femi Phillips, and a host of others, spearheaded those groups from the early 1960s.

Between then and now, the growth of this industry has been phenomenal due to the size of our population, the abundance of raw talents as well as the diversity of our culture.
